M/S Wasa Express: Lithium Battery-Powered Ferry

The Wasaline ferry, M/S Wasa Express, is equipped with Super B lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries, which provide a critical backup power source during a blackout. These batteries ensure that the ferry's essential pumps remain operational, allowing the vessel to operate safely with only one generator instead of two, improving energy efficiency and reliability.

In 2019, eMarine optimized the Wasa Express for greater energy efficiency by implementing advanced automation and control systems. The upgrades included:

  • HVAC system optimization
  • Automated pump control
  • Improved engine room ventilation
  • Heat recovery and cargo space heating

These improvements have resulted in significant environmental benefits, reducing the ferry's annual emissions and energy consumption by:

  • 2,633 tons of CO₂
  • 3,740 MWh of electricity
  • 823 tons of fuel

By integrating lithium battery technology and optimizing onboard energy systems, Wasaline continues to enhance sustainability and efficiency in maritime transport.
